Sharon Lee and Steve Miller have done it again! This is another great book in their Liaden Universe series. It continues the story of Theo Waitly, half sister to the male half of the current Delm of Clan Korval. It is an aptly named book in many ways, one of which is that her brother wants Theo to come home. Home, of course is no longer on Liad, but on Surebleak.
There is much more gathering than this, of course, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the book.
Lee and Miller create very good characters, and fill out their stories enough that the reader can almost feel they know all of them very well. In The Gathering Edge, we learn more about Theo and the self-aware ship she is bound to, Bechimo, as well as her entire crew.
One of the very best things about Lee and Miller books in this series, is that every book contains enough back story that you can pick up the series at any point. I started reading this series at a point when the books were hard to find, so I didn't read the early novels in sequence, but rather, in the order that I could find them. Now, of course, since then, I believe that all the books are available as e-books either from Amazon.com or directly from the publisher at Baen E-books.
Now, I also want to say that this backstory does not come as massive info dumps that bore the long time reader. Nope! This book, as well as every other book in the series, is a compelling read, a book you don't want to put down. Indeed, the only thing wrong with The Gathering Edge is that it ended too soon.
